Hebrews 13: 5 says: Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.
My grandmother used to have some funny sayings that left me wondering. One of these sayings was: I’m as contented as an old cow put out to pasture. It was like she was trying to teach us something but I was too young to understand.
We all understand contentment in our own way just as we are all different in our own likes and dislikes. Contentment is a satisfaction or an accomplishment in something we have achieved, or in life itself. I would be surprised if my grandmother hadn’t found satisfaction in her senior years.
I’ve met people who are never contented. They always want the ‘greener pastures’ just beyond the fence. And, although striving for a better job, a better lifestyle or a better future can be a good thing, we need to be careful about how we achieve our goals.
Do we allow the temptations of cutting corners, taking advantage of others or neglecting our priorities in our attempt for a better life? Do we compromise our Christian beliefs or family’s needs? We need to take a good look at our actions and the motives behind our actions to get to where we want to be. Sometimes we need to take a step back and be contented. If we allow God to use what we have He will take us forward into the desires of our hearts, if it’s in His plan.

Scripture Verses used are from the King James Version of the Bible

“I’m as contented as an old cow put out to pasture.” I love sayings from the past. I haven’t heard this one before, but it applies perfectly to where we should be. And your right, people in general are always striving for greener pastures. As I get older my striving is for contentment that comes from God.

What is the Scripture? If we have food, clothes, and maybe a roof over our heads—or something like that—we should be content? But Paul goes further, saying that in whatever state he’s in he’s learned to be content in the Lord Jesus.

Thank you for reading and noticing that I may have missed the full message of one of my favourite chapters in scripture. However, my intent was not to exclude our Lord Jesus Christ. My readers are usually not seekers but believers. I merely write briefly about how these verses related to my life. The content of ‘Content’ were based of memories of my dear grandmother who knew more about scripture than anyone I knew and know who has done in-depth studies of His Word. Again, thank you for reading and I’m pleased you know the full meaning of Scripture.

Sorry for not giving you or your grandmother proper credit or honor. Looks like I get carried away at times. Thank you for your patience with me.

Wise words, Chrissy. When asked if I am happy I will often explain that I am contented – just like your grandmother.

I think we have all heard ‘contented’ used by older people we love.

We’re not contented, because we aren’t satisfied with what we have. Jesus left heaven and died on the cross for us…what more could we want?
