Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything. James 1:2-4 (NIV)
How should we view the trials that we go through? First, we should reflect on the reasons why we are facing them. Unfortunately, for most of us, our questioning comes from our human form of questioning of the— ‘why me?’ aspect. This is of course just questioning God. Often this type of thinking easily moves into anger. This is the exact opposite of how we are directed to respond.
We are told to “consider it pure joy.” Now that seems a strange statement. If someone were to teach me to do that when facing trials, I would be tempted to call him an idiot. This would of course reveal only an immaturity and the unbiblical nature of my biblical and spiritual thinking.
We should view our trials with joyfulness, knowing what is really happening. That is, when we are being tried, our faith is being tested. What does that mean? When we face a challenge, do we respond by what we see and feel—or by what we believe to be true? If we are being tested it should increase our stability, our steadfastness, and our faith.
Father, help me to count all things as pure joy, whatever we face today. Give me the faith that is unwavering in all trials and let me found tested and true. Amen.

A king is born today,
within a stable full of straw—
This baby in a manger lay,
is who the shepherds saw.
He came to earth to breathe as man,
to live, to die for us all—
This was God’s own plan,
what shall I bring the Father’s son?
Worship in humble adoration,
to this child our offering bring—
Praise, love, faith and hope,
heavenly angels sing.

It twinkles high above the earth
Once glistened on a royal birth—
Encircled by an angel’s choir
Proclaiming God’s desire.
Shepherds feared that dazzling light
Attending their sheep that holy night
It lured wise men from afar—
Vowed to follow this shining star.
Jesus was born in a cattle stall
Found wrapped in a shabby shawl
Beneath a clear night sky—
His mother Mary sits nearby.
No matter where we are
You can see the Christmas star—
Look within your heart He called,
It’s the brightest star of all.

Psalm 72:12-13 “For he will deliver the needy who cry out, the afflicted who have no one to help. He will take pity on the weak and the needy and save the needy from death.”
Colossians 1:27 “To them God has chosen to make known among the Gentiles the glorious riches of this mystery, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory.”
It’s sad to think that for many people Christmas means nothing more than parties, decorations, holidays, and time off work. I see more to this time of year; it’s a blessed reminder of the birth of Jesus Christ. My hope is founded in this baby; a baby that was born to save mankind. My hope in him is real.
In reality, though, it’s difficult for many people to find hope. We live in a misplaced world of social injustice, crime, poverty, homelessness, unemployment, disease, pain and loneliness. Jesus means hope to all mankind, but we have to grasp the promises of God and take them to the world – whether it be across the road or across the ocean.
When you find Jesus, you find hope, and there’s no false hope in Jesus. It’s not a fanciful fairy tale wishing for a happy ending. We as Christians need to spread hope; not just by preaching The Word but by doing The Word. Millions of people do not even know Christmas is just around the corner, or what the fuss is about. Many people don’t know where their next meal will come from, and wouldn’t know what turkey and Christmas pudding is. They don’t see any hope. They see nothing but despair…
As Christians, we are supposed to be the hands and feet of Jesus. As His hands and feet, we are to serve Him by serving others. Christmas is a renewal of hope. It reconfirms for us the revelation that Jesus is the reason for this season. It was settled long ago, so we don’t have to doubt it. Jesus is the fulfillment of our hope; our deepest longings come true.
Lord, let your hope and joy radiate through us. Help us to embrace the hope we have in you and share it with those less fortunate than ourselves, whether it be spiritually, emotionally, or by using our hands and feet for your glory. Amen.

Luke 2:8-20 says: “And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid. And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord. And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger. And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying, Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, goodwill toward men. And it came to pass, as the angels were gone away from them into heaven, the shepherds said one to another, Let us now go even unto Bethlehem, and see this thing which is come to pass, which the Lord hath made known unto us. And they came with haste and found Mary, and Joseph, and the babe lying in a manger. And when they had seen it, they made known abroad the saying which was told them concerning this child. And all they that heard it wondered at those things which were told them by the shepherds. But Mary kept all these things and pondered them in her heart. And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things that they had heard and seen, as it was told unto them.”
At the time of Jesus’ birth, people who attended sheep were considered one of the least significant of the human race by other people. They lived quiet and humble lives, often spending their days and nights with their flocks. The sheep that they tended were probably bred as sacrifice animals for the temple in nearby Jerusalem. These shepherds were just doing their usual job when the angels appeared before them.
I think I would be shaking in my sandals too. The news the angel gave the shepherds would have surprised them too. Babies would have been plentiful during the census and specific descriptions were to help the shepherds find Jesus among the crowded town.
When they went down to Bethlehem, they found Mary, Joseph, and the baby Jesus. They worshipped the newborn king before returning to their flocks glorifying and praising God for all the things they had heard and seen. It had been just as the angel had told them.
I can imagine the shepherds telling their friends and families for weeks after the event. This incident would have made a significant change in their tedious lives. History tells how shepherds had become accepted and probably even admired by many.
Jesus refers to himself as the “good Shepherd”.
John 10:11 tells us, “I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep.”
John 10:14 says: “I am the good shepherd, and know my sheep, and am known of mine.”
The next time you sing the Christmas carol While Shepherds Watched Their Flocks by Night, take notice of the words and remember their significant place in the Christmas Story.
Father, thank you for sending your son to earth as a small baby. Thank you that lowly shepherds were among the first to greet Jesus and for the reminder of the significance of the birth. We praise you, just as the angels and shepherds did on that night so long ago. Amen.

Luke 2:15-16 says: “And it came to pass, as the angels were gone away from them into heaven, the shepherds said one to another, Let us now go even unto Bethlehem, and see this thing which is come to pass, which the Lord hath made known unto us. And they came with haste, and found Mary, and Joseph, and the baby lying in a manger.”
I’ve often heard of women not making it in time to a hospital to give birth. Even a well-prepared home birth can be messed up if the expecting mother is caught across town in the supermarket. Taxi births are common, and so are babies born in elevators. But what would be more degrading for a mother in the modern world than to give birth in a tiny barn full of smelly animals?
It’s true that the birth itself is often quickly forgotten when the joy of holding your newborn baby in your arms follows. Your baby is the most beautiful princess or little prince, you have ever laid eyes on. It’s then time to show your precious new family member the nursery that you have so lovingly put together during the months of waiting. The cradle that took you forever to choose, and don’t forget the bunny rugs.
But wait a moment! I don’t remember reading that part in the Christmas story. The shepherds found the baby lying in a manger. A manger is kept in a stable. It’s used as the feeding trough for donkeys and milking cows! There would probably even be hens and a goat or two sharing the small space around the manger. Here is where the King of the Jews was sleeping. And, sitting close by with watchful eyes, were Mary and Joseph; a humble pair who had traveled many miles to find no room in the inn.
This cradle was made for royalty. Jesus was born in a manger because He was, and is, and will always be “Lord of Lords and King of Kings”.
This same Jesus was found by the shepherds wrapped in swaddling clothes and lying in a manger—a cradle made for royalty.
Father, thank you for sending your son to earth. Help me never to forget the wonder of that first Christmas morning when the King of Kings came as a humble baby who was given by you to be called Jesus our Saviour. Amen

Matthew 5:16 says: “In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.”
Christmas is approaching fast and stores are filled with decorations and gifts for all ages. Christmas trees, real and fake, dazzle us with lights and baubles. Let’s face it; it gives us all a feeling of excitement that Christmas is just around the corner.
Celebrations of the birth of Christ may vary from family to family, from church to church, and from tradition to tradition. In reality, it doesn’t matter how we celebrate as long as the true message of Christmas is our main focus.
As a child, my favourite Christmas decoration was the Christmas Star. We placed the star on the top of our tree year after year. One Christmas, we visited cousins who used a fairy. A star was nowhere to be seen. As a nine-year-old at that time, I could not comprehend how a fairy could replace the precious tree-topper. Later in life when I had my own family the idea of a fairy tree-topper never entered my mind. Our own children were brought up knowing the true meaning of Christmas: The birth of Jesus. The brightness of that Christmas star reflected the announcement of royalty’s birth, Jesus—the light of the world and guided the shepherds and the wise men to Jesus.
In the same way, our hearts need to reflect the love of Jesus who resides in us. Our lives need to reveal the light that burns just like the Christmas Star. We can let our light so shine before men—and our families who don’t always see eye-to-eye on what Christmas is about. Live as Jesus would live. Speak as Jesus would speak; with love in our hearts that shines like the Christmas Star that can lead others to Jesus.
This Christmas, let’s show love and grace to those who see things differently from us. Let your light shine so we glorify your Father, who is in heaven.
Father, let our light shine from within that we may lead others to Jesus, and let the true message of Christmas be seen by your love within us. Amen

David took a deep breath. The musty smells of the old town hall made his nose itch. This place still reminded him of community gatherings, nativity plays, and combined Easter services. An old plastic Christmas tree leaned against the wall; bent over and covered in cobwebs. He pushed aside the sagging stage curtain and touched one of the fifteen tarnished Christmas bells which hung in a neat row. He closed his eyes and tried to recall the familiar sounds. All he heard was the squeak of the front door.
‘Mrs Jessop, good to see you. What’s it been…?’
‘Twelve months’, she groaned. The old woman placed her scarf and handbag on a nearby table. ‘Where is everyone? I want to be home early tonight.’
‘Well, Teresa married in January and moved to the coast. Donald won’t be here… you knew his wife died from cancer a few weeks ago?’
‘Yes, I read the funeral notice in the obituaries but I was too busy to go.’
David was about to continue when a soprano rendition of Hark the Herald Angels Sing echoed in the empty hall. He turned toward the door and laughed as his star performer approached. The girl’s chubby face reflected the enthusiasm that oozed from her.
‘Meredith, you look um… colourful… as usual.’ He stepped back and gazed at her peculiar outfit.
Mrs Jessop stood with her hands on her hips. Her head moved slowly from side to side. ‘I hope we’re not dressing in florescent angel costumes this year to sing Angels in the Realms of Glory.’
Meredith giggled. ‘It’s been a fabulous year David. I earned an art scholarship in London.’ Her eyes sparkled. ‘I have always wanted to work in London. Perhaps this will be my big chance.’
The side door swung open and a middle-aged woman entered as she spoke. ‘David, I can’t believe it’s that time of year again.’ She smiled and offered a hug. ‘John won’t be coming. He’s still away at army training.’
Mrs Jessop frowned. ‘Well, well. That was a bit inconsiderate of your son, Joan. He could have at least waited until after caroling season before he joined the Army.’ With another shake of her head, she slumped heavily into a chair.
Almost simultaneously, two other choir members burst into the hall through the front and side entries. The commotion rose with reminiscing and laughter which now seem to brighten the dreary hall.
David glanced at his watch and whistled. ‘Okay everyone, you know the routine. We’ll have three practices before we start caroling. Let’s begin tonight with Meredith’s choice, Hark the Herald Angels Sing.’ He paused as the choir members took their places in a curved line, shuffling closer to fill gaps where others had once stood. David cleared his throat. ‘It’s sad to think that if we go on like this, within a few years our town’s caroling group will no longer exist.’
Smiles disappeared and expressions became solemn. Whispers betrayed their thoughts.
Joan, one of the older group members, broke the quiet chatter. ‘Oh please, don’t say that David.’
He straightened and coughed. ‘Well let’s not spoil our practice. Maybe we can have a meeting sometime and do some recruiting for next year.’
Mrs Jessop made a throaty gruff noise. ‘Oh, but we can’t have strangers singing carols with us.’
‘Why not?’ Meredith’s face flushed.
‘Well… because…’
David tapped his baton on his music stand. ‘Twelve years ago, we began with fifteen carolers. We all knew each other like family and regardless of which church we attended, we visited each other during the year. We shared each other’s joys and sorrows.’ He sighed heavily. ‘When was the last time we commenced our annual caroling practice with a party… or polished our bells?’
Meredith sat on the floor and crossed her legs; her head in her hands. The line dispersed. Joan’s husband Rolf, brought a chair over so Joan could sit.
‘So, it’s come to this?’ Mrs Jessop sighed.
The hall grew silent. The only sound was the occasional creaking of the rafters and the wood-rotted door rattling with the slightest breeze.
‘I still want to sing Hark the Herald Angels Sing’, Meredith whispered.
David tapped his baton again. ‘OK, let’s sing our best this year. We’ll polish our bells and let the whole town know that we want caroling to continue. Let’s announce the birth of Jesus like we haven’t done before.’
A gentle white snow began to fall outside and the words Hark the Herald Angels Sing echoed in the old town hall and throughout their little town.

Luke 1:26-28 says “And in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God unto a city of Galilee, named Nazareth, to a virgin espoused to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin’s name was Mary. And the angel came in unto her, and said, Hail, thou that art highly favoured, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women.”
The New Testament begins its account of Mary’s life with the visit of Gabriel the angel who was sent by God as His messenger. The Lord God himself selected Mary to be the mother of Jesus. The Bible records Mary’s role in key events of the life of Jesus from his virgin birth to his crucifixion.
Christians acknowledge Mary as “blessed among women” (Luke 1:42) but we do not all agree that Mary is to be venerated. She is considered to be an outstanding example of a life dedicated to God.
Luke 1:38 says “And Mary said, Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word. And the angel departed from her.”
Mary used the word “handmaid” which is usually translated as “bond-servant” or “slave”, which refers to someone whose will is consumed by the will of another—in this case, Mary’s will is consumed by God’s. From this I see her attitude being parallel with what John the Baptist said in John 3:30 “He must increase, but I must decrease” (KJV) or, “He must become greater; I must become less.” (NIV).
Whichever argument you choose, or doctrine you follow, Mary had to have been one special lady for God to choose her to be the mother of Jesus. She was a handmaiden of the Lord.
This Christmas let us remember that we celebrate the birth of our Lord Jesus Christ who came to earth as a human child. It was Jesus who died for our sake and put our sins upon Himself. He is the Lord of Lords and the King of Kings.
He was born of Mary—a servant of the Lord.

We sing our Christmas carols
and pray our saintly prayers—
We decorate our Christmas trees
and share our Christmas cheer.
We are tempted to dispute
over wasted Christmas cards—
Buy a ten-for-a-dollar pack
and write some worthless words.
Do we ever take the time
to choose a better card?
Do we really want a Santa
who drives a flying sleigh?
There’s something more to Christmas
than dashing through the snow—
A message of the new-born King,
is what I want to see.
Scenes of Mary and her child
with shepherds kneeling near—
Angels in the realms of glory,
announcing Jesus’ birth.
Do you see the Christmas star
reflecting in the clear night sky?
Those tiny specks of glitter dust
brings gladness to my heart.
Treasures of the Saviour’s birth
displayed upon each card—
To decorate our mantle shelf
or hung in every room.
Gold, Frankincense and Myrrh
three very special gifts—
Each to honour our new-born King,
asleep within His crib.
I want to share the joy I feel,
with every card I send—
Each one affirms our Father’s gift
and hope to all mankind.
So precious is our Savour’s birth,
we need to spread the news—
It’s time we took a stand
and share Him with the world.
Take some time to choose a card
it’s really not that hard—
Perhaps you could design your own,
but make it from your heart.
Come; let’s rejoice in His birth,
spread the news, Christ is born—
Choose a card that declares the truth;
don’t waste those Christmas cards.

Psalm 103:1 tells us “Praise the Lord, my soul; all my inmost being, praise his holy name.”
A recent visit by the coast had me reminiscing about the days spent writing my first book. As I breathed in the seaside freshness, it stimulated the desires that once beckoned me to explore the dream. Pale pink clouds caressed the sunrise like a morning hug. Birds sang praises to welcome the dawn.
My thoughts reached out as in a dream, capturing a peace within my soul. While the sun elevated slowly into a glowing sky, words surged forth like a shifting stream. My fingers moved quickly to keep up with the flow of thoughts. My heart was overwhelmed by the outpouring of phrases previously unknown. There’s something about the break of day that gives freshness to the mind and releases expression onto a page.
Immersed in my writing, I was still aware of the increasing brightness filling the sky beyond the open window, but I was also conscious of the glow within my inner being. If there is ever a place I feel in harmony with God, it’s when I’m absorbed in writing. To not write would create an empty cavern in my life.
My desire is to praise Him through words inspired by creation. My hopes and dreams rest in knowing that He is the only one I need to bring joy and delight.
Father, let Your Word penetrate my soul. You are the author of my faith. Allow me, Lord, to bring joy and delight to your heart in return. May the words I write be inspired by your love and grace. Amen.

Philippians 4:7 – And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. (KJV)
The dictionary meaning of peace:
calm, quiet, stillness, tranquillity, silence, harmony, serenity.
My thoughts on peace:
When the storm is over, peace stretches like a rainbow.
Peace is the beautiful presence of my Saviour while in prayer.
When there are no more tears, peace surrounds me like a hug.
Peace flows like a river through my soul.
Philippians 4:7 – And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.
Colossians 3:15 – And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to the which also ye are called in one body; and be ye thankful.
John 14:27 – Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid. (KJV)
Peace isn’t always easy to find in the midst of stress, pain, and struggle.
Peace is not always found among those we love and care about.
Peace needs to be a desire of our hearts.
Peace can be our goal.
Peace be with you this time of year.
Father, thank you for the peace you bring to our lives. Guide our path through life and let your peace reign in our family and friends. Lead our enemies into a life of peace with You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Psalm 22:1 – My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? Why are you so far from saving me, so far from my cries of anguish?
I believe God is big enough to carry our doubts, criticisms, anger, confusion, and frustration, but there often seems to be no explanation as to why things happen. Yes, we are free to question God, but we need to develop patience for God will reveal the answers only when we are ready to hear them.
Our world is not at all perfect, and neither are we. God is perfect. He wants us to continue to read His Word so our faith may be strengthened for He sent Christ to show us the way. Don’t look to find meaning to the suffering, but let the suffering add meaning to our lives. If we have never suffered, how can we empathize with others who suffer? If we never fail, we can’t lift up those who also fail. Our suffering adds meaning to our lives. Our pain adds to our love for others who also suffer, as we suffer, as Christ suffered.
Hebrews 4:16 says: Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.
We need to ask God to help us to become more patient and more like what he wants us to be. Thank Him for the good things, and seek the resilience to endure the bad. To live, not in the shadow of fear and despair, but in the light of God’s love.
Perhaps one day, God will answer our questions of ‘why?’ Perhaps we are just impatient, and want to know the answers before we are ready to understand or accept them. Whatever the reason, trust Him and know it’s all right to ask Him questions. Allow God to develop patience and trust.
Father, as we call on you in our times of need, help us to grow in patience and understanding as we learn to trust you in all things, bad and good, in our lives. Amen

Somewhere in the early dawn
I find solitude.
Birds are still at rest
and the dew lingers.
What blessings will this day bring?
Despair or delight...
Either or both may arise
But, He will be there.
God’s new day has been prepared
His Spirit drifts through
Giving comfort to my soul
In His breath of peace.
In silent prayer I whisper
For a lot less pain
And a day without fatigue
I remain hopeful.

I believe in His healing power but if it were always God’s will for people to be healed, then everyone would be healed every time he or she became ill or lives with a chronic illness. If good health were always God’s will, then Christians should never die. They should never be in pain.
Neither can we blame someone’s bad health or disease on a lack of faith, for we know, biblically, that God sometimes uses illness to accomplish His will. Paul “left Trophimus sick in Miletus” (2 Timothy 4:20), and Paul himself had a physical ailment that the Lord declined to heal (2 Corinthians 12:7–9). Jesus only healed one man at the pool of Bethesda (John 5:1-15) The list goes on. There are lots of Biblical encounters where healing was not always the final outcome.
I’m not saying God can’t perform a miracle. I believe He absolutely can. However, the greatest healing beyond physical healing is spiritual healing. While physical healing restores the body, spiritual healing addresses the deeper, often unseen, wounds of the soul, restoring a person’s relationship with God and offering lasting peace and joy. This is always the greatest outcome.
Just my thoughts today.

Never will I leave thee;

But for human weakness, I’d stay all day;
How do I live in strength I do not have?
I want to be released to understand.
It was for you I lived and died;
My child, you are set free.
I’m lost in worship within your presence;
The room is filled with your fragrance,

Revelation 14:6-7 – “Then I saw another angel flying in midair, and he had the eternal gospel to proclaim to those who live on the earth—to every nation, tribe, language, and people. He said in a loud voice, “Fear God and give him glory because the hour of his judgment has come. Worship him who made the heavens, the earth, the sea, and the springs of water.”
I don’t often use verses from Revelation but I like these. What does it mean to fear God? For the unbeliever, the fear of God is to fear the judgment of God and eternal death. As believers, fear is the reverence of God.
Hebrews 12:28-29 says: “Wherefore we receiving a kingdom which cannot be moved, let us have grace, whereby we may serve God acceptably with reverence and godly fear, For our God is a consuming fire.”
I’m not scared of God. As a believer, I have no reason to be scared of Him. I have His promise that nothing can separate me from His love.
Romans 8:38-39 tells us “For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
Fearing God means to have such a reverence for Him that it influences the way I live. This reverence and admiration of God is what the fear of God means for me as a Christian. This is the motivation for me to surrender my whole self to God, the Creator of the Universe; the key to serving the Lord with all my heart and with all my soul.
Father, I worship You in awe of Your great love for me. Thank You for the key to being able to serve You in my daily life. I give You all the glory and worship You, the Creator and God. Amen

Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light. – Matthew 11:28-30 (NIV)
Ah yes… it’s one of those “let go and let God” verses. It takes on a new meaning when we learn to rest and let Him work on our behalf. We need to trust God in all our circumstances and wait expectantly for the peace that follows.
I think sometimes we pray for God to help us, to lead us, and then we walk away trying to do things on our own just as we did before we went to the Father. We need to rest in knowing He is in control even if it’s not an instant answer.
I read once in a daily devotional book by Susie Larson that God doesn’t make things nice, He makes things new. How right she is. Thank you, Susie, I needed to read that.
Resting in God is the key to letting Him do what He has planned. Don’t take the burden back up and carry it around with you when you have left it with the Father.
Father, thank you that when I’m weary and burdened down with circumstances in life I can come to you in prayer and lean on you. Help me to rest in you knowing you will make all things new. Amen

Matthew 7:7 tells us to: “Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you.”
1 John 5:14–15 says: “And this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask anything according to his will, he heareth us: and if we know that he hear us, whatsoever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we desired of him.”
Matthew 6:6 also tells us: “But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret, and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly.’
Prayer has to be my favourite topic and many related verses come freely. Prayer is an important part of my life and I wouldn’t survive without it. My months of pain in 2017 brought me closer to the Father than I could ever believe possible. Prayer had a remarkable impact on my healing and recovery, and on those who prayed and believed with me.
Through prayer, we have direct access to the throne room of God the Father, the almighty and living God. We can take anything to God in prayer and He hears us. Sometimes we need to wait for answers and sometimes his answer is no, but He does answer. Whether it is a prayer for healing, finances, or salvation of a loved one, whatever the need, we ought to be diligent in our prayer requests.
Whatever is on your heart right now, tell Him. God already knows your need but we need to tell him what’s on our hearts and also give thanks for His answer, even before he gives it.
Father, you are my rock and my salvation. I hand all my circumstances over to you. Teach me how to pray. Give me the desire to draw closer to you so I may give all things over to you, believing your will and plan will be fulfilled in your perfect timing. Amen.

Crickets chant and shadows dance
Moonbeams peek through distant trees
Where birds sing in hypnotic trance
that seems to echo beyond the seas.
Clouds drift by, and stars shine
Leaves rustle with the evening breeze
Bringing peaceful charm to God’s design
and tames the night owl with new ease.
Creation sleeps and nature rests…
Summer’s fragrance fills the air,
In His presence, I am blessed
to end the day with evening prayer.

Help me to hear you
In the wind and the rain
In the peace of the garden
And the sounds of the birds.

Help me to feel you
In the darkest of nights
In the midst of my sorrow
Through the depth of my pain.

Help me to find you
In the truth of your Word
In my daily walk with you
And in times of great joy.

Help me to see you
In the freshness of dawn
In the midst of every day
Until the sun goes down.

Psalm 31:24 – Be of good courage, and he shall strengthen your heart, all ye that hope in the LORD.
Colossians 1:5 – For the hope which is laid up for you in heaven, whereof ye heard before in the word of the truth of the gospel; which has come to you.
Do you ever feel like giving up? Do your circumstances weigh you down? Being a Christian doesn’t mean life is going to be easy nor does it mean that nothing will go wrong. We all live in the same world as we did before our salvation, but now we have hope to overcome and look forward to better things to come. Overcome may be an old fashion word but it needs to be used more often. – 1 John 5:4 says: For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith. (KJV)
To live in hope gives new meaning to all situations, and believing is the key to hope. Nothing is impossible with God. Nothing is too big. Even in your darkest hour, don’t give up hope. God is bigger than any of your struggles and he watches over you every moment of your lives. He will never leave you and will bring you into that place of restoration and healing. Believe in the Lord Jesus Christ and hang on to the hope you can have in him.
Father, teach me to trust you in every circumstance that threatens to engulf me. Help me to believe in a better tomorrow and the hope that you have to offer. Show me how to be strong in your Word and live in hope through the promises you have given to me. All of my ambitions hopes and dreams, I give to you. Amen

Keeper of my lighthouse, please –
Shine in me today.
Standing firm on God, my Rock,
May I never stray.
‘I Am the solid Rock on which you stand.’
Clouds of fear impair my sight –
Casting doubt upon the source.
Trying hard to do what’s right,
Help me stay on course.
‘I will always be there to light your way.’
Keeper of my lighthouse, I know
that You are in control.
Lead me from this gloom of night
Compass for my soul.
‘I will steer thee beyond your darkest night.’
Like a ship off course I wander
Upon a darkened reef.
Lord, steer me safely yonder
and bring me back from grief.
‘I will lead if you will only follow.’
Keeper of my lighthouse –
You bathe me in Your light.
Your radiance makes straight my path
and shines with all Your might.
‘I will never leave thee nor forsake thee.’
Through this storm of dreadful pain –
Waves consume my life.
Bring me through my tempest strain—
Lead me from this strife.
‘I will guide thee through every storm of life.’
Keeper of my lighthouse, come!
Let Your bright light shine,
Casting doubts and fears away—
Save this life of mine.
‘Child, I Am the Keeper of your lighthouse.’

Isaiah 55:12 says: “For ye shall go out with joy, and be led forth with peace: the mountains and the hills shall break forth before you into singing, and all the trees of the field shall clap their hands.”
I love this verse. It’s full of hope. The delight I feel when I’m in His presence bathes my soul with the joy of the Lord and brings an overwhelming transformation to my spirit. To worship the Father takes me into another realm of emotional joy and into His throne room of prayer. Even when sadness touches my life, when pain is always near, or when a friend or family member is hurting, His presence always brings joy back into my spirit.
Isaiah 51:11 says: “Therefore the redeemed of the LORD shall return, and come with singing unto Zion, and everlasting joy shall be upon their head: they shall obtain gladness and joy, and sorrow and mourning shall flee away.”
Praise God, I often feel like singing and I can’t get enough of His presence that comes with the joy that He gives me. But, even when I don’t feel like singing or praising God, He can give me back that joy. When sadness threatens to overtake me, I can still go out in joy and be led forth in peace, giving thanks in all circumstances; he does replace my sadness and grief with the joy of the Lord.
Let your week be filled with the joy of the Lord.
Father, we thank you for the joy that only you can give us. Help us to praise you in the good times and the bad so we may know your joy in all things. We may not feel like singing but help us give thanks in all circumstances. Amen

Romans 5:3-5 tells us – “And not only so, but we glory in tribulations also: knowing that tribulation worketh patience; and patience, experience; and experience, hope: and hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us.”
Waiting is always difficult and so often we feel it’s wasted time. Patience can be difficult to find in many situations.
Some waiting pet hates:
* Waiting in a doctor’s surgery, especially when the doctor is getting close to being an hour late.
* Being stuck in traffic.
* Waiting in a queue at the supermarket.
* Waiting for that important phone call or email.
And my favourite:
* Being kept ‘on hold’ on a phone call so you can speak to the right person/department after pressing numbers in reply to mechanical voices.
Maybe you can add more of your own pet hates that take all the patience you can muster.
There is the struggle of waiting patiently on the Lord’s timing too. We need to be aware that our waiting is a human factor that can be both aggravating and disappointing.
Someone told me once that “wait” is God’s middle name. Is God always the instigator of waiting? Does he use these waiting times for His glory and purpose? Answers to these questions can cause further frustration in the waiting game, but God can use all these kinds of waiting to build patience for His Glory.
Galatians 6:9 says: “And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap if we faint not.”
Father, teach me patience through your Word. Help my experiences teach me patience. I can’t always see You working in the times of waiting. Help me take a look back after situations to see that You were there all the time and that your timing is always perfect. – Amen

Jeremiah 1:20 – Ah Lord God! behold, thou hast made the heaven and the earth by thy great power and stretched out arm, and there is nothing too hard for thee. (KJV)
A visit by the coast had me reminiscing about the days spent writing my first book.
If there is ever a place I feel in harmony with God, is absorbed in writing.
Amen.

John 15:1-2 tells us: “I am the true vine, and my Father is the husbandman. Every branch in me that beareth not fruit he taketh away: and every branch that beareth fruit, he purgeth it, that it may bring forth more fruit.”
I’ve found these two verses very thought-provoking. Some time ago I was prompted in the spirit to devote a whole month to His Word and prayer. I needed to reevaluate my time and priorities and I could only do this with His help. These words from John’s gospel often came up, even when I wasn’t actually meditating on them.
Pruning is often the hardest thing to deal with in the Christian walk; I know it is for me. It’s amazing though how at times it seems like a continual trimming, and sometimes it hurts. When areas of our lives no longer produce fruit, when a daily task no longer seems meaningful or when a love for a mere diversion becomes a total time waster, we need to evaluate.
And evaluate what I did. With God’s guidance, pruning, and direction, my love for writing became prioritised, and finally found direction. A renewed love for an old hobby replaced a diversion that now compliments my writing. There wasn’t anything wrong with my diversion, I just needed to prioritise with God’s guidance.
Father, when you take me through times of pruning away the dead areas of my life, give me the strength to accept your changes. I know your changes in my life are always because you love me and because you have plans for my life that can only be fulfilled when I trust you and allow your pruning to take place. Amen.

It was a beautiful morning for a walk. After parking my car close to the footpath that led to the river, I stepped onto the paved walkway and turned left toward my favourite place. The water was as smooth as silk. Its glass-like appearance mirrored the beauty of God’s creation that surrounded it. The sun was warm and not a single cloud in the sky. The air was filled with the aroma of damp earth after the rain. I breathed in the fresh clean air, deep into my lungs. The heavens were filled with the sound of a flock of geese; all the indications of a beautiful day filled my senses.
It came from under the bridge. It was flying very low. Every now and then it skimmed the surface so delicately that a slight ripple formed and died.
I know there’s a song ‘on the wings of a snow-white dove’ and there’s Isaiah 40:31 that says ‘we’ll soar on the wings of an eagle’ – but on the wings of a duck was something new to me.
As I watched this unattractive but graceful, swift-moving creature, I began to wonder just how awesome God really is. The power in those wings gave it the speed of an eagle, yet the gracefulness reminded me of a dove.
The charm of that duck brought me into a new understanding of beauty. God the designer and creator of the whole world, made all things, well.
Father, thank you for showing your glory in nature. I thank you that you continually reveal your power to us even with the simpleness and plainness of this duck.

Therefore, brothers and sisters, since we have confidence to enter the Most Holy Place by the blood of Jesus, by a new and living way opened for us through the curtain, that is, his body, and since we have a great priest over the house of God, let us draw near to God with a sincere heart and with the full assurance that faith brings, having our hearts sprinkled to cleanse us from a guilty conscience and having our bodies washed with pure water. Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful. And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching. – Hebrews 10:19-25
Have you been discouraged by someone you have respected and encouraged? Did you find this disheartening and possibly weakened your desire to continue to encourage others?
Words can either build up or pull down. We need to persevere in encouraging others in their faith— until He comes. This is a basic instruction from His Word. It’s not an option nor is it a ‘when we feel like it’ requirement.
There are times I have to stop and reflect on the needs and situations of others and sometimes I don’t feel like encouraging. For instance, when someone has left me less than encouraged. But in reality, it’s my responsibility to encourage others – no matter how I feel or what others may have done to me.
Don’t allow discouraging words to weaken your faith or neglect the gifts God has given you. Don’t allow disappointments to prevent you from encouraging others.
Galatians 6:9 says “Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up!”
Father, help me to keep my eyes on you. Strengthen me in times when I’m discouraged by others so that I may persevere in doing what is right. Help me to hold fast the profession of my faith in you without wavering. Amen.

Do you know where I left my humour? It must be around here somewhere. I had it yesterday. I’m sure I did. How could I have lost my humour?
It’s always been a part of me. I’ve never gone anywhere without it. I have used it every day. Humour is one of those possessions I thought I would always have. How could I have lost it?
I could have left it in the fridge like I misplaced my cup of coffee yesterday. Perhaps it’s in the laundry cupboard or in the ironing basket. Surely, I wouldn’t have left it lying around for the dog to chew. Perhaps I left it under the bed. I haven’t looked there for days. Where could my humour be?
Probably it’s gone forever, like the coins that slipped through the hole in my purse. Maybe it’s gone down the kitchen sink, just like my favourite ring. I don’t know why I’d put it down—not even for a moment. Maybe it’s in the garden. I could have left it there when I found that poor dead bird. Or, did I leave it someplace else?
Perhaps I left my humour in my journal. I’d been trying to hide my pain and cope alone. I didn’t want to burden anyone with my misery, so I poured it out to God. It might be in my Bible, somewhere in the Psalms, possibly in chapter 23—between the shadows of death and fearing no evil. But, why would I have left it there?
I checked my emails before I went to bed hoping I would find my humour there.
A stranger said I’d made them laugh with a story I had written.
Wendy said she was missing me and I had always made her day.
A cute little puppy greeted me. He was on an eCard sent by Val. It made me grin but it was the words that got to me: shoulders to lean on and hands to hold, hugs to comfort too.
Do you think my humour is closer than I think?
Wait one minute! It must be around here somewhere. Last night that movie made me laugh and I saw the funny side when hubby dropped his cookie into his cup of tea. My son gave me a picture book of elephants at the beach. It’s amazing how some silly photos encourage you to smile. How could I have missed it?
Suddenly I realized I hadn’t lost it. I had it all along. I guess it’s like a simple smile—I just had to put it on.

The night is dark. There is no moon. A distant nightbird sings its song. Gentle breaths of wind quiver leaves against a window. Fighting cats hiss and spit, assaulting the quietness, and then… abruptly ceases. Barking from some neighbour’s dog echoes away the intruding felines.
Silence returns momentarily before the faint sound of a baby’s cry lingers for just a little while. The dim of the night remains undisturbed.
I close my eyes in expectation for sleep to come. Only silence.
A suppressed whisper infiltrates the peace of the surrounding blackness. My eyes spring open. Alertness returns. ‘What was that’? Again, there is silence. Tied eyes begin to close but it transpires again. ‘That murmur, where’s it coming from?’
This time I lay awake picturing the room around me. Faint outlines of a chair appear as my eyes adjust to the gloom. The whisper returns.
My voice is barely audible. ‘Who’s there?’
I feel strange but I’m not afraid. It’s soothing and not at all alarming. Though faint as it is, I sense an inner stirring. I slide from my bed and feel my way to the window. As I part the curtains I gaze out to the unnatural darkness. Not even a pale glow of a street light can be seen. The world is completely dark and silent. ‘What is this?”
Again, the whisper comes, this time from within my soul. ‘Pray for those who do not know me for darkness will fall upon those who do not heed my call. The day will soon be here and time is running out. I need my children to plead for the lost so they will find the light. Don’t wait my child because lives are being lost to darkness every single moment. I have made you for a purpose. Through prayer, you will know my will. I have given you a gift that can only be used to reveal my glory.’
The whisper fades to a hush and the world outside comes faintly into focus. I look up to the heavens where stars begin to shimmer. The sounds of the night returned to my ears. Leaves rustle with the wind re-stirring. I turn and fall on my knees and weep for a world of lost sinners to see His light.

Sparrows take flight from their nesting trees—
Creating rain-soaked leaves to glisten like shattered mirrors
And sun rays capture the essence of the after rain.

Mingling with the simple freshness of dampened earth,
That fills the air with splendour and His goodness
And penetrates the senses with pure simplicity.

Mercy can be a difficult topic to tackle; yet I find it’s one of the most desirable gifts Christians seek. To show mercy is an awesome experience but to receive mercy is not always easy. Sometimes people misunderstand those who show mercy. Those who show mercy often don’t even realise that’s what they are demonstrating.
To show mercy is to show forgiveness, compassion, kindness, pity, understanding… even leniency. When explained this way, I can see how people have shown mercy toward me and how I have shown mercy to others. I also understand how we can misinterpret another’s acts of mercy. Have we become unaccepting of another’s gifts? Do we feel complacent with our circumstances or those of others?
Jesus showed mercy/ compassion and He has instructed us to show mercy. Shouldn’t we also accept mercy from those He has instructed to show mercy?
Exodus 33:19 says: “And he said, I will make all my goodness pass before thee, and I will proclaim the name of the LORD before thee; and will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and will shew mercy on whom I will shew mercy.”
Isaiah 30:18 says: “And therefore will the LORD wait, that he may be gracious unto you, and therefore will he be exalted, that he may have mercy upon you: for the LORD is a God of judgment: blessed are all they that wait for him.”
Where and when was mercy shown to you in the past month?
When was the last time you showed mercy to another?
Father, help us to show mercy to others no matter the situation. Teach us to be compassionate and live our lives as you would. Also, help us to remember that when others show mercy to us so we do not reject them, because the mercy they show is the mercy you would have them give as you would have us to give. Amen

In restless sleep he lies,
Protected from the wind and rain

Revealing nature’s best—
Unknown strength begins to rise
Boldness to pass the test.
Day by day he stretches forth
With courage new life brings—
Timeless changes make him soar
On flights of eagle’s wings.
Freshness comes with gentle rains,
Relieves the summer’s heat;
Power bleeds through woody veins—
A vigor to explore.
Daringly he salutes a cloudless sky,
Graceful and upright, bold.
Visions to capture for his own—
A splendour to behold.
Autumn leaves fall all around
Like graceful butterflies;
Limbs grow stronger every year
And reaches to the skies.
He stretches out to fill the air,
Stands bold beside his peers;
With his solid strength and power,
He’ll stand for many years.
Seasons come and seasons go,
Grand valour takes its place,
No longer swayed by winds of time—
Grown to majestic grace.
Daring to pass the test of time,
He gazes down to see
God’s design of might and courage—
Boldness in a cedar tree.

Psalm 46:1-3 – God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Therefore, we will not fear, though the earth gives way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea, though its waters roar and foam and the mountains quake with their surging. God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore, will not we fear, though the earth be removed, and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea; though the waters thereof roar and be troubled, though the mountains shake with the swelling thereof.
These are without a doubt, some of the most comforting words from Scripture I know by heart. Through all situations, I have only to rest on God for my strength.
With my husband’s employment, we moved frequently. When our children were little, I dreaded those times. We often spent weeks in temporary accommodation and waiting for our personal belongings to arrive. During those transition times, it was characteristic of the Department of Defence to send him away on a course.
During one of these relocations, which was a few hundred miles from our nearest extended family, our son became constantly ill with serious allergies. Three weeks into the hotel stay I had to ask the cleaning staff not to use chemicals in our rooms unless I could plan time to be out of the room and have it aired before we returned. Our son was just over eighteen months old at the time and his sister was three and a half. Their ages alone meant around-the-clock care, but the youngest slept very little. He had about two hours after his midday meal which gave me some grace and much-needed rest. His sister was usually dozing too or looking through a favourite picture book.
New states, new towns, and new experiences were always daunting, and settling into a new normal day-to-day life in these situations proved to be often stressful and lonely. But I remember these verses from Psalm 46 as my source of comfort. I don’t believe it was a coincidence that these verses appeared so often during my daily devotions. They became my key verses and since that particular relocation, they have become part of me through many other situations over the years.
We all need words of comfort at one time or another and we can be assured that God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.
Thank you, Lord, for your comfort in every situation. Help us to know that you are our refuge and strength and guide us through difficult times, fear, and loneliness. Whatever we face in our day-to-day lives, teach us to lean on you for all our needs. Amen

To seek His face and sing to Him—
Oh! What joy to me it will bring.
Even when my eyes are dim,
I will always be there, with my King.
To sit at His feet or dance for Him—
Oh! What music, oh what hymns;
Angels all around the throne will sing
With joyful sounds, on might wings.
To tend His garden and meet with Him—
Oh! What happiness this will bring;
Just to know I’ll walk with Him
Forever, my eternal home to win.

Sweet golden locks frame her face
where tears flow onto frills and lace—
Fingers clutch a teddy bear
and baby blues reflect despair.
It makes her daddy’s heart break…
My sweet girl, why are you still awake?
Dark shadows dance throughout the night
a trembling voice reveals her fright.
Nightly dreams become a nightmare;
too much for this child to bear.
Invading ogres make her tearful—
Pretty one, please don’t be fearful.
Darkened hours can be quite scary
and sounds of the night make one wary.
Try not to cry my little one,
to be fearful is not fun—
Loneliness makes the hours long.
Prayers to Jesus will make you strong.
Gentle Jesus meek and mild,
please watch over this precious child—
Place loving arms around her Lord.
Our hearts beat with one accord,
give peace, and music to her ears…
Jesus, take away her fears.
Calmness enters, God’s love displayed;
rest in Jesus, all fear will fade.
His love brings peace to your soul—
Know our Father’s in control,
all fear is gone, sleep to restore…
My little princess weeps no more.
