At a brief glance in my in box, I was trying to recall when I posted about rulers. Then while I was waiting for WordPress to open to your reply, a yardstick came to mind. LOL!
I do think you’re right though about the “watching over our souls” part. Being submissive to the ones who do watch over our souls is an easier pill to swallow.
